Latest News on AglunaTM Technology

Accentus Medical has today announced that the number of patients who have received patient-specific tumour mega-prostheses modified with Agluna™ biocidal surface enhancement has now surpassed 30.

These patient-specific prostheses are manufactured and distributed by Stanmore Implants Worldwide Ltd (SIW), with the Agluna™ surface enhancement supplied by SIW under licence from Accentus Medical. The devices have mainly been implanted at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in London and at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham, although recently patients in mainland Europe have also received Agluna™ modified implants.

The first patient-specific prosthesis utilising the Agluna™ surface modification was implanted in March 2006, and it is hoped to increase the patient cohort to 100 by the end of 2008.

New technology developed by Accentus Medical presented at ISOLS

On 13 September, at the International Symposium on Limb Salvage (ISOL) in Hamburg Germany, Dr Paul Unwin, CEO and General Manager of Stanmore Implants Worldwide Ltd (SIW), presented to a group of leading European orthopaedic surgeons, a new orthopaedic surface modification technology developed by Accentus Medical.

Utilising a wet chemistry technique, the process developed by the Accentus Medical research and development team led by Managing Director, Dr Martin Pickford, produces a silver biocide surface modification to titanium or titanium alloy implants.

During laboratory testing the concentration of silver within the surface has been shown to be effective in eliminating many strains of bacteria which are commonly found in orthopaedic patients suffering from post-operative infections.

The new surface technique known as AglunaTM has been used to date on 18 patients receiving patient-specific custom made tumor implants manufactured by SIW, with encouraging results.

Stanmore Implants approached Accentus Medical in 2002, to create a new surface for their patient-specific mega-prostheses that would help reduce problems of infection.  In March 2006, the first Stanmore Implant patient received the AglunaTM modified implant.

Accentus Medical and Stanmore Implants present new technology to British Orthopaedic Oncology Society

New orthopaedic technology developed by Accentus Medical and used by Stanmore Implants Worldwide Ltd on patient-specific custom and massive orthopaedic endoprostheses was presented on 6th July to surgeons attending the British Orthopaedic Oncology Society Annual Scientific Meeting in London.

The process developed by the Accentus Medical research and development team, produces a silver biocide surface modification to titanium or titanium alloy implants.  The concentration of silver within the surface has been shown to be effective in eliminating bacteria.

Stanmore Implants approached Accentus Medical in 2002, to create a new surface for their patient-specific mega-prostheses that would help reduce problems of infection.  The new surface technique known as AglunaTM  has been used in seventeen patients so far with very encouraging results.  Following the presentation, plans are now in preparation with a view to expanding this patient-specific study to all Orthopaedic Oncology centres in the UK.
