The Solution
The use of a low concentration of silver for its biocidal properties is well known and has been documented in a variety of uses:
Several microbiological studies 3,4,5,6 have demonstrated that concentrations of ionic silver as low as 20 ppb are effective in eradicating a wide range of bacteria.

- NASA - space shuttle water sterilization (100 ppb)
- Swimming pool purification (20 ppb)
- Legionella Pneumophilia control at (20-40 ppb)
- Silver loaded silicone catheters and pyrolytic
carbon heart valves - Silver loaded surgical dressings
- Silver loaded paints for use in therapeutic
environments

The engineered surface modification is therefore integral with the substrate and loaded with silver by an ion exchange reaction. This process results in an implant with an aesthetic appearance and a more durable and wear resistant surface. The process is also consistently reproducible and relatively inexpensive.
